We invite you to participate in the 7th edition of the revived international wine competition Pohár Karla IV./The Cup of Charles the IV. a competition focused exclusively on two royal grape varieties historically associated with Charles IV and Bohemia: Riesling and Pinot Noir.
The competition has been expanded into a two-day event and is moving to the royal city of Prague. It will also include a conference and a grand tasting of all submitted samples at the New Town Hall. A significant added value is the opportunity to attend in person and present your winery or importing company free of charge at the New Town Hall on May 14, 2026 (2:00–3:00 PM for professionals, 3:00–7:00 PM for the general public). This event will also include wine sales.
You may be wondering why—already in the past, we have directed the competition towards a special recognition for Pinot Noir, and we have continuously developed this idea. After all, where else than in Bohemia, and at a competition named after Charles IV, should these beautiful terroir-driven wines compete? So if you want to find out how your Riesling or Pinot Noir stands in an international comparison, do not hesitate to enter.
The competition is open to all wines from these varieties—white, rosé, red, and sparkling (see the statute for more details). In addition to medals, the winning wines will receive financial prizes or valuable awards from the competition partners. Awards will be granted for the best wine in the following categories: overall champion, best Riesling, best claret/rosé, best Pinot Noir, and best sparkling wine. A special prize will also be awarded to the best wine from the Bohemia and Prague wine region. Wine categories are defined by residual sugar levels according to the statute, and sparkling wines must contain at least 50% of one of the permitted varieties.
Our mission is to raise interest in wine in the Czech Republic and to bring the best Czech, Moravian, and international wines made from these exceptional varieties closer to the public. At the same time, we aim to provide a professional evaluation of wines from different wine regions, municipalities, and vineyard sites, thereby supporting wine production and sales with respect to their origin.
The official announcement of the results will take place on Thursday, May 14 at 3:00 PM at the New Town Hall, Prague 2.
A professional conference dedicated to these two noble grape varieties will also be part of the program.
